Verbal Morphology: I-Nun

Exercise Description

This part of the exam will test you over verb morphology with focus on the following parameters:

  • Verbal classes:
    • I-Nun
  • Verbal stems:
    • Basic: Qal, Nif‘al
    • Doubling-stem (“intensive”): Pi‘el, Pu‘al
    • H-stem (“causative”): Hif‘il, Hof‘al
    • Hit-stem (“reflexive”): Hitpa‘el
  • Verbal inflections:
    • Perfect/Qatal
    • Imperfect/Yiqtol
    • Vav-Consecutive/Wayyiqtol
    • Participle
    • Infinitives (construct, absolute)
    • Volitive (imperative, jussive, cohortative, etc.)
  • Verbs with suffix ending (pronominal) may also be included.

Important (Please read before proceeding!):

  • Hints: Remember some verbal forms may have more than one morphology (i.e. תִּכְתֹּב = both 3fs and 2ms). In that situation, a “Hint” will be provided to help you narrow down the correct choices. For example, if the “Hint” row shows Person ≠ 3fs, it means that the verb in the question is not third-person, feminine singular, so you will need to choose another option otherwise, it will be incorrect.
  • Imperfects/Yiqtols and Vav-consecutives/Wayyiqtols: When the “Text” row of the question shows an Imperfect/Yiqtol inflection of a verb, check to see if the MyView word (purple fonts) has a Vav-consecutive/Wayyiqtol, i.e., an Imperfect/Yiqtol verb with vav-consecutive attached to it. If so, then you must choose Vav-consecutive/Wayyiqtol as your answer.
For example, if the Text row shows the Hebrew word יִכְתֹּב but the MyView shows וַיִּכְתֹּב the Vav-consecutive/Wayyiqtol option should be chosen instead of the Imperfect/Yiqtol.
  • Tense/Inflection: The answers for participles include the voice, i.e., participles (Qal, Nifal, Piel, Hifil, Hitpael) or passive participles (Qal passive participle, Pual, Hofal). Choose the best answer based on its stem.
  • Qal passive perfect and imperfect tenses found in some textbooks and reference grammars are parsed as Pual and Hofal for this exam (e.g. יֻקָּ֔ח should be taken as a hofal form rather than a qal passive form). The Qal passive participle remains the same.
  • Do not select the “Something else” button for your answer, or it will be incorrect.

Video

The following video will explain how to answer questions for the Hebrew vocabulary section of this exercise. Pay close attention to the purpose of the “Hint” and how to identify the “Lexeme” or root letters of verbs.:
