Start typing consonants: the A-D series

The following introductory guide to your first exercise is explained in the video How to practice the ABGD and the A's as well as in the unit content introduction Unit 01: Learn ten consonants, two a sounds and verbal roots

Here is the gist of it:

  • Start to practice the first four consonants of the Hebrew alphabet by typing them. Follow the convention that you type the first, second and third consonant. Almost all Hebrew VERBS HAVE THREE CONSONATS.
  • The consonants you use for training are shown in LEXICAL STEM, i.e. the innermost part of the Hebrew verb with the three consonants - usually - and some vowels. So you need to learn that some as yet unknown consonants can stand at the beginning of the verb (here called a preformative) or at the end of the verb (the verbal ending). You do NOT write those yet, but will learn them soon!
  • For now the game is to recognize the three consonants of verbs. For the first four consonants Hebrew only has two frequent verbs, אבד 'perish' and בגד 'treat faitlesslesly'. Write these consonants as the LEXEME.
  • Pronounce the consonants by adding vowels, i.e. pronounce first consonant - A - second consonant - A - third consonant. The correct Hebrew vowels are:
    • After the first consonant, pronounce a long /a/ sound which is written as as the   ָ symbol, called qāmeṣ, and transliterated as ā
    • After the second consonant, pronounce a short /a/ sound which is written as the  ַ  symbol, called pataḥ, and translitterated as a
  • You can transliterate the first verb as ʔbd, pronounced as ʔāvad, and the second as bāgad.

REMEMBER

  • PRONOUNCE: consonant-ā-consonant-a-consonant, i.e. כָכַכ
  • VOWEL: ־ָ־ַ־
